Sam Smith has shared they are on the mend after suffering a serious ‘vocal cord injury’ that left them having to cancel several shows in recent weeks.
The singer, 31, was in the middle of their Gloria tour, but was first forced to postpone a performance in Glasgow after being struck down by a virus in April.
Soon after Sam then had to pull out of subsequent shows in Birmingham, Tel Aviv and Manchester, before canceling the remainder of their UK tour last week.
Now the singer has posted a video on social media updating fans on how they’ve been feeling of late.
“Hi everyone, I hope this video finds you well and safe and healthy,” they began.
‘I just wanted to send you guys a little video to keep you updated on how it’s been going with my voice.
‘I’ve just come back from the doctor’s today and it’s actually really, really positive news.’
Sam then explained their vocal chords were ‘healing’ and that after a week of vocal rest, it ‘was looking good.
“It looks like I am going to be good for the rest of the shows, so that’s really amazing news,” they added.
Then saying how they wanted to send a message to fans to say ‘thank you so much’, Sam explained how the ‘beautiful messages and love and healing energy’ they had sent had ‘meant the world’.
But they said they were ‘still and would always be so sorry’ to the fans who had missed out on the show due to the cancellations.
‘These things are completely out of my control and I’m just sorry and I will be doing everything I can to get back to you as soon as we can and when we can,’ they said.
Sam then reiterated how they were planning on keeping people updated and again thanked everyone for their support.
Many fans threw their support behind Sam, with one person writing how their health had come first.
‘You can always reschedule a show and plan new ones. And we will always support you to do the best for yourself. Imagine you’d carried on singing and messed up your chords permanently? That would be devastating. Keep being your perfect self,’ they wrote.
Another added: ‘Take whatever time you need. Healing is important, you can’t be there for everyone if you’re not there for yourself. take the time! We love you.’
After having to leave the stage with just four songs into their Manchester show last week, a statement was later issued on Sam’s social media accounts explaining the extent of their injury.
‘Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice, it is said.
‘If they take some rest they will be able to perform again.’
The post ended with the message: ‘I love you all. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’
